The Truth About Invisalign® – Does It Get Results?

Have you been wanting to straighten your teeth, but been put off by the thought of metal braces? You’ve heard about Invisalign® clear aligners. But, do they really work?

Before we do that, let’s learn a little more about how Invisalign® came to be.
Why the need for Invisalign®?
You might be surprised to learn Invisalign® technology has been straightening teeth since 1997. One of the founders of Align Technology, the makers of Invisalign®, wore a retainer. He reasoned that since the retainer was able to prevent his teeth from shifting out of place, it should also be able to move teeth into their proper place.
That’s when clear aligners were born.
Granted, the thought of braces made from transparent polymer material being able to do the same job as heavy metal braces seemed hard to believe. However, as the word about Invisalign® grew, so did the demand.
Why has Invisalign® become the most in-demand orthodontic option today? Here are a few of the reasons:
- They’re nearly invisible!
- They can be removed
- More comfortable
For teens and adults who want straighter teeth, but don’t want to advertise the fact they are having orthodontic treatment, Invisalign® is the perfect solution. The clear aligner trays are much less noticeable than metal braces.
They are also much more comfortable to wear.
No wires poking you in the mouth!
Best of all, because they can be removed for up to four hours each day, you can take them out to eat, brush, take school photos, give a business presentation, or any other special event.
Try to do that with metal braces!
So, we’re all agreed that clear aligners have a lot of benefits. But, can they do the job?
Does Invisalign® work?
Align Technology received Food and Drug Administration approval in 1998. Since then, they have been steadily improving the effectiveness of their product. Today, Invisalign® isn’t seen as an alternative to braces, but as an equal treatment that offers the same results with a proven, yet different, system. Often, in a shorter period of time!
Invisalign® uses incremental retainers that are progressively switched out every two to three weeks, and that gently, but steadily shift teeth into the right position.
Can Invisalign® be used by everyone who wants straight teeth? No.
There are still some complex cases where metal braces would be a better option. Invisalign® can successfully straighten cases that include:
- Crossbite
- Underbite
- Overbite
- Crowded teeth
- Gap teeth
- Open bite
